Join us at Bowhouse on 15th August at 3.30pm for an introduction to our seaweed workshops, taking place over the weekend of 22nd and 23rd August. This session gives you a first look at what's in store, from paper making with seaweed to foraging and sustainable food practices, led by Cally and Jayson Byles.
After a career in journalism, public relations and fundraising, Cally took on a new challenge in 2018, doing something she'd always loved as a child, making things. She went on to complete a Master's Degree in Fine Art & Humanities at Duncan of Jordanstone Art College, Dundee University, with Distinction in 2021. Her main material is washed up seaweed, which she lets speak with its own voice, combined with other waste materials to explore the interdependency between human and non-human life. She was shortlisted for a John Byrne Award in 2023, with her work described as intertwining the natural and industrial in a new and arresting way.
Jayson is a passionate forager, trained professional chef, permaculturist, home gardener and advocate for sustainable living. Originally from New Zealand with Maori Pacific heritage, he has a lifelong love of gathering wild food and a strong passion for local, high-quality food, shaped by over a decade in Scotland. His experience as a seaweed harvest manager gave him valuable expertise in Scottish seaweed, and his years working with communities have shaped his wish to share the simplicity of local, wild and seasonal food with everyone.
