SPACE TO BREATHE

2023

NATURE, PROCESS, ART & IMAGE

Harry CORY WRIGHT
Susan DERGES
Andy GOLDSWORTHY
Alexander LINDSAY

Held at BOWHOUSE in The East Neuk of Fife

15 JULY - 6 AUGUST 2023

The 2023 exhibition centred on the physical and mental creative processes of four great artist-photographers documenting the natural world.

Harry Cory Wright, Susan Derges, Andy Goldsworthy and Alexander Lindsay approach landscape and nature in their artistic output in unique methods. Yet they are linked by their experimentation and the physicality of their creative processes.

For them, the action of making the work is of equal,
if not greater, concern than the resulting image.

They find creative fulfilment in the journey it takes to the final image. Today, everybody is a photographer, but few take the time to slow down, look, feel and respond to their natural environment as intensely as these artists.

The 2023 Events.

STB 23 hosted a series of talks from eminent names in the arts world and arts-related activities were included as part of the first ‘Space to Breathe’ exhibition and festival.

Creating and looking at photographs of the natural world can provide us with moments of healing immersion. For artists, this often combines experimental, physical and psychological processes. Susan Derges, Andy Goldsworthy, Harry Cory Wright and Alexander Lindsay all create photographs using landscape and natural forms to locate this uplifting feeling, but each of them uses differing technical and visual approaches. Join Martin Barnes, as he explores their works and the idea of reflective, lyrical observations of nature throughout the history of photography.

Martin Barnes is Senior Curator of Photography at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) London which he joined in 1995. Barnes has also curated multiple UK and international touring exhibitions and is the author of numerous photography publications.

Susan Derges discusses her art and process with Dr Alistair Rider

Susan Derges is a British photographic artist whose camera-less techniques have encompassed subject matter informed by landscape and scientific experimentation. In her pioneering work using bodies of water near her home in Dartmoor and around the Findhorn in Scotland, she captures the natural movement of water by placing light sensitive paper into rivers, streams and shorelines at night. Her work explores the connectedness of the natural world, and our place within it. Derges has exhibited extensively in Europe, Japan and the United States and has works in several major museum collections.

Dr. Alistair Rider is a senior lecturer in the History of Art department at the University of St Andrews. Dr. Rider's research primarily focuses on minimalist and abstract art from the 1950s to the present day and he has written extensively on this topic in numerous publications.
