Land & Sea is tied together by the enduring legacy of Anna Atkins, the nineteenth-century English botanist whose illustrated book, Photographs of British Algae, is widely recognised as the first to include photographic images. Through her innovative use of seaweed and the cyanotype process, Atkins brought together scientific observation and photographic experimentation in a way that continues to inspire artists today.
Closely connected to both Sir John Herschel and William Henry Fox Talbot, Atkins occupied the photographic and scientific inner circle, challenging the invisible boundaries that often positioned women as outsiders to science, and in doing so, mastered the simple yet intricate cyanotype process.
Inspired by Atkins' work, Space to Breathe and Studies in Photography celebrate the expansion and exploration of camera-less photography and coastal aesthetics that bridge both land and sea. Through events including seaweed papermaking and cyanotype workshops, Land & Sea continues Atkins' spirit of experimentation, inviting audiences to explore the creative possibilities that emerge when art, science, and nature converge.
