JANE BRETTLE

Jane Brettle studied Fine Art at the West of England College of Art and the University of Sunderland and gained an MA in Photographic Studies from the University of Derby. She lives and works in Edinburgh. Awards, Bursaries and Commissions include the National Galleries of Scotland, the Royal College of Surgeons, London, Glasgow Year of Architecture and Design, Photo 98 and the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art.

Her work has been exhibited and published nationally and internationally and is in various public and private collections including the Deutsche Bank Art Collection, Creative Scotland, the City Art Centre, Edinburgh, the National Galleries of Scotland and The Royal College of Surgeons, London. She was formally a Lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art and an Associate Senior Lecturer at Northumbria University, developing the Contemporary Photographic Practice Course, teaching theory and practice at undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD level.

VERGING

Verging experiments with the idea of merging, upending - Land and Sea - North and South - it has progressed through continually walking in the same very specific areas of East Lothian and South West Cornwall as my previous project ‘mine’ and I continue to ‘collect’ images - but now turn towards the ‘edge’. As this work has progressed the ‘walking’ process generated a considerable number of images, many of them suggesting a visual ‘Verging’ between northern and southern mining landscapes. Both of the sites are close to the sea and as well as sharing similar histories and man made interventions they are continually in flux through cyclical climate disruption caused by us.
